Understanding Dog Bite Injuries

A dog’s front teeth will grab and compress your skin and the smaller teeth will also tear into your flesh.  The remaining teeth can cause crushing injuries to bone.  Effects of dog bites can be disastrous especially if there are multiple dogs involved or if the areas bitten involve looser skin such as the face or neck.  There is a risk that the wounds can become infected or that the bites leave life-long deforming scars in visible areas.

The injuries will need to be cleaned, possible sutured and also bandaged.  The injuries need to be closely monitored in order to avoid infection.  Some injuries may require serious surgical intervention and the services fo a skilled plastic/reconstructive surgeon.

STEPS TO FOLLOW IN THE EVENT OF A DOG BITE:

1.  Have someone call 911.
2. You need to gather information about the dog!  Try to find out who the owner is or from what property the dog emerged prior to the attack.
3. If the owner is available, get their contact information and find out if the dog is up to date with its rabies vaccinations.
4. If at all possible, take photos or have someone take photos of the scene of the attack with surrounding locations as well as the dog involved and anyone controlling the dog post attack.
